The popular Chevrolet Equinox received some major revamping last year including a V-6 engine. Thus, for the 2014 model year, the updates are limited to new wheels for the Equinox LTZ, new option packages and new exterior colors: Atlantis Metallic, Champagne Silver Metallic, and Tungsten Metallic.
The 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine from last year continues to power most models. This powerplant puts down 182-horsepower and 172 lb.-ft. of torque to the front wheels. Fuel economy is an EPA-estimated 22 mpg in city driving, 32 mpg on the highway and 26 mpg in combined driving*. Models equipped with the all-wheel drive (AWD) system get 20/29/23.
The optional engine is a 3.6-liter V-6. Replacing the Equinox’s previous 3.0-liter V-6, this new one is more powerful, pumping out 301-horsepower and 272 lb.-ft. of torque. According to Chevrolet, that’s 14 percent more horsepower and 22 percent more torque than the prior engine. Yet fuel economy is a very similar for both V-6s at 17 mpg city, 24 mpg highway and 20 mpg combined. (16/23/19 with AWD.)
The Equinox is offered in LS, LT and LTZ trims. All are well-equipped. Standard safety features include six air bags, anti-lock disc brakes with electronic brake force distribution, electronic stability and traction control systems, and Onstar. LT and LTZ models also get a backup camera as standard equipment.
In creature comforts, the LS gets cruise control, keyless entry, a six-speaker audio system and satellite radio, and a sliding second-row seat. Features for the LT trim are split among two sub-trims: 1LT and 2LT. The former adds notable items like heated mirrors and that backup camera system while the latter brings heated front row seating and premium audio. The LTZ, as the top-of-the-line model, gets many of the items from the lower trims. Features exclusive to the LTZ include leather seating, a powered front passenger seat and a powered liftgate. Shoppers can further customize their Equinox with several option packages as well as standalone items.
